DUBLIN – European Union regulators fined Twitter today. The social media company did not remove fake accounts quickly enough. This broke the EU’s strict new online rules.

The European Commission announced the penalty. They said Twitter, now called X Corp, did not follow the Digital Services Act (DSA). The DSA requires big online platforms to fight misinformation. Twitter failed to meet this duty.

The fine totals 1.35 million euros. Regulators found Twitter did not act fast enough. Fake accounts and bots spread harmful content. Twitter did not remove them properly. This happened during important events. It included elections and public emergencies. The platform lacked effective tools to spot these fakes.

The investigation started last year. EU officials saw problems with Twitter’s systems. They warned the company. Twitter did not fix the issues well enough. Regulators said the company’s efforts were insufficient. They were also too slow.

A Commission spokesperson stated the fine sends a message. “All platforms must obey our rules,” they said. “Protecting users online is critical. Platforms must tackle disinformation aggressively. Twitter did not do this properly.”

Twitter has not commented publicly on the fine yet. The company can appeal the decision. But it must pay the fine now. The EU will keep watching Twitter closely. They expect better performance in the future. This is the first DSA fine against a major platform.
